What is Model UN?
Model United Nations, abbreviated as Model UN or MUN, is a competitive simulation of international affairs and diplomacy, in which students act as United Nations delegates. They engage in debates, negotiations, and discussions on a wide range of global issues, such as international conflicts, environmental concerns, human rights, and more. The primary objectives of Model UN are to promote understanding of international affairs, improve public speaking and negotiation skills, and enhance research and critical thinking abilities. Participants work to draft resolutions and come to a consensus on how to address complex international problems, mirroring the real-world activities of the United Nations. Model UN conferences take place worldwide and provide a platform for students to learn about diplomacy, global issues, and the workings of international organizations while honing their teamwork and communication skills. It serves as an excellent training ground for future leaders, diplomats, and individuals interested in global politics and cooperation.
Club History
NHHS MUN was a vibrant, competitive, and popular club at North Hagerstown, attending various conferences and events. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Model UN as a whole, and subsequently NHHS MUN, subsequently lost activity and membership. In 2022, after 3 years of inactivity, NHHS MUN was refounded. Since this refounding, NHHS MUN has attended multiple conferences across multiple states, and expanded membership significantly in the first year of activity. As the first Model UN in Washington County, we hope to expand MUN membership and activity through hosting our own training conference, as well as publicizing our attendance to other conferences.
Why Should I Participate in Model UN?
Model UN equips students with a multitude of skills such as public speaking, research, debate, and critical thinking. Students apply these skills in conferences, where they collaborate and debate with other students in order to draft and propose resolutions to a global debate. Participants in Model UN also gain a broader global perspective. Each committee within a conference will debate a different topic, so delegates get the opportunity to research unique global matters and expand their perspectives.
